YUNGBLUD

Two weeks.

That's all I had to create this animated short film for YUNGBLUD's 2023 world tour.

​

I was approached to bring Dominic's original story to life. A psychological journey through anxiety, self doubt and the monsters we create inside our own minds.

​

The monster became the heart of the film.

​

I didn't want it to feel like a horror creature. I wanted it to feel as though it had grown inside the girl's head. I built its face from MRI brain scans and its body from scissors, surgical instruments and other sharp objects. It became a collage of fear rather than flesh.

​

German Expressionism, Fritz Lang, Ingmar Bergman and early black and white cinema all found their way into the visual language, alongside collage, painted textures and animation.

​

With only two weeks to deliver, there wasn't much time to second guess ideas. Sometimes that's a good thing. It forces you to trust your instincts.

​

More than anything, this project reminded me how lucky I am to work with such an incredible team. The schedule was completely ridiculous, and without them it simply wouldn't have happened. More importantly, it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun to make.
